Caring for Your Granite Countertops
A natural stone built to last a lifetime. A little routine care keeps your Havenstone granite sealed, spotless, and stunning for years.
Granite is one of the hardest surfaces you can put in a kitchen, but it is a natural stone, so it rewards a little simple care. Follow these four habits and your countertops will look as good years from now as the day we installed them.
Wipe Daily
Use a soft cloth or sponge with warm water and a little mild dish soap. Skip harsh, acidic, or abrasive cleaners, which can wear down the seal over time.
Seal Once a Year
Granite is naturally porous. A yearly reseal keeps liquids from soaking in and protects against stains and moisture. A quick water-drop test tells you when it is time: if water stops beading, it is ready to reseal.
Blot Spills Quickly
Wine, coffee, oil, and citrus can stain if they sit. Blot spills right away with a paper towel instead of wiping, so you lift the liquid rather than spreading it.
Use Boards & Trivets
Granite is heat and scratch resistant, but cutting boards and trivets keep the surface flawless and protect your knives at the same time.
Do
- Clean with warm water and mild dish soap
- Reseal once a year
- Blot spills as soon as they happen
- Use trivets under hot pans and cookware
Avoid
- ✕Use bleach, vinegar, or citrus cleaners
- ✕Let acidic spills sit on the surface
- ✕Cut directly on the stone
- ✕Use abrasive scrubbing pads
Granite care questions, answered
How do I clean granite countertops every day?
Wipe them down with a soft cloth, warm water, and a small amount of mild dish soap. Avoid harsh, acidic, or abrasive cleaners, which can break down the sealer over time.
Do granite countertops need to be sealed?
Yes. Granite is porous, so we recommend resealing about once a year. If water no longer beads up on the surface, it is time to reseal.
Will granite stain?
Sealed granite resists stains well, but wine, oil, coffee, and citrus can leave a mark if left to sit. Blot spills quickly and keep the surface sealed to prevent staining.
Can I put hot pans on granite?
Granite is very heat resistant, but we still recommend using trivets. Repeated direct heat and sudden temperature changes are best avoided to keep the stone looking its best.
